Join GroundWorks this fall as we return to the Akron Art Museum for the second year of a two-year project in partnership with the Museum, funded through a Knight Foundation Arts Challenge Award to create new dance in response to selected work from the museum’s permanent collection. The work will be premiered at the Akron Art Museum December 12th and 14th. Executive Artistic Director David Shimotahakara identified 5 images from the Akron Art Museum’s acclaimed photography collection, as a starting point for his new work.
“I selected 5 photographers/artists, 3 women and 2 men, whose creative ideas and processes could not be more different. I felt however, these artists share a distinctive vision of what it means to be fully alive in oneself and to the world around us. They each allow us to connect to other places, people, history, and experiences in ways that remind us how we come to understand our identity and the process of becoming who we are.” – David Shimotakahara
The artists and images that David Shimotakahara will be responding to with the company are:
Manuel Alvarez Bravo – Retrato de lo Eterno (Portrait of the Eternal)
Esther Bubley – Memphis Tennessee – Passengers waiting for a bus at the Greyhound bus terminal
Sophie Calle – Les Tombes #17 (The Graves) Mother, Father
Adam Fuss – From the series My Ghost [swan]
Carrie Mae Weens – Untitled from the Kitchen Tables Series (Woman with friends)
As part of the project, GroundWorks will engage with the museum membership and larger community through its Action/Reaction Program. The program is designed to increase awareness and understanding of the creative connections across art disciplines and through the lens of movement, to encourage new perspectives about specific work from the museum’s collection. Ultimately, the program offers opportunities for individuals to respond to a multi-discipline creative experience through their own creative practice.
Free and open to all, but space is limited and reservations are required.
