Meteors and Moonrise, an Astronomy Program

Park visitors who brave the cold, and hopefully a clear December 14 evening on High Bridge will have an opportunity to see shooting stars associated with the annual Geminid meteor shower and watch as the moon rises over the Appomattox River valley. Our hosts will conduct a laser sky tour of winter constellations as well. Once the waning moon rises around 7:30 p.m. over the tree line, participants can examine its craters and other surface features through binoculars. The best time to see the meteors during this year's Geminid shower will be between twilight and the 7:30 moonrise, after which the light of the moon will wash out the star field and make it difficult to see the shooting stars. In past years, this program has yielded impressive displays of meteors, as the Earth makes its annual run through a debris field left behind by an asteroid. High Bridge Trail State Park's astronomy events are held near the center of High Bridge where the view of the sky is unobstructed. When walking onto the bridge structure, visitors should turn off any flashlights that do not employ a red filter. The event is free, but State Park parking fees apply. **Location Detail: High Bridge
