CANCELED: Woman Suffrage -- More Than Just the Vote

UPDATE: due to the rapidly developing coronavirus pandemic, the Capitol building is currently closed, and this exhibit is unavailable for viewing at this time.

In 1912, Oregon’s white males voted to give white women the right to vote. Seven years later, on June 4, 1919, the 19th Amendment was passed by the United States Congress. However, the 19th Amendment was not ratified until August 18th, and certified on August 26, 1920. It read: “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex.”

It can be argued that the 19th Amendment was more than just ‘the vote’ but rather an inroad for women to make their way into politics. This exhibit looks at some of the most influential, Oregon women who did just that, and left their mark on Oregon politics.
